A cold victory

A cold victory
Kalto stood on the ground, right between the two opposing factions.

He wished that it hadn't come to this, but neither side had been willing to talk. Now over the northern plains two airship armadas floated. Each unmanned but each heavily armed.

The technologies of war had progress to the point where the only thing that suffered was the environment around the battle. Soldiers no longer fought on the front lines, instead guiding their weapons from the safety of home.

What Kalto had found over the years was that this type of fighting meant that neither side had a reason to stop fighting. No one would surrender, and the planet itself suffered for this.

In the past week Kalto had gone back and forth between the two sides, desperately trying to make them see reason, but to no avail. Although he had been created as a weapon Kalto hated violence.

Now his worst fears were coming to pass as he saw both air fleets come over the horizons. Each consisted of hundreds if not thousands of ships. The resulting collateral damage from this battle would completely devastate the surrounding area.

Kalto looked around at the landscape he stood in. It was one of the few areas or pristine wilderness left on the planet. He knelt down, patting a local rabbit on the head. If he didn't stop this pointless battle, these animals wouldn't be around at the end of the day.

"I wish there was another way," Kalto said to himself while stroking the rabbits head, "I wish there would be no fighting. But the time to worry about that is over. Now is the time to act."

Slowly Kalto stood up and looked once more into the sky. The fleets were closing on each other fast. Even with his chaos powers Kalto knew he wouldn't be able to handle that many ships from such a great distance.

Unless...

Kalto sighed, he hated to use his greatest ability, but the time had called for it. Closing his eyes Kalto reached deep within himself. There he grasped for the chaotic powers that flowed through his body. He grasped the powers and brought them to the surface, all of them. Kalto could feel the cold power surge across his entire body as he ascended to what his brothers had dubbed "Infinite Chaos".

His body was now glowing with the power of chaos cold. It wouldn't last long, but for his purposes it would last long enough.

Kalto placed his hands on the ground and concentrated. He then formed a pillar of ice out of the very snow he stood on. Riding the pillar Kalto ascended in the skies until he was level with the incoming fleets. Both groups of airships released their missiles.

Kalto stood on his pillar of ice and shouted, "I WILL NOT LET YOU DESTROY MORE OF THIS WORLD!"

He raised his hands, one pointed at each fleet, as the missiles passed by him, "Chaos Zero Storm."

His power leapt out of each palm, erupting towards each of the fleets. So intense was the cold he generated that the air itself began to freeze solid. The missiles were caught in mid flight by the approaching energies. With their fuel chilled they ceased to fly and plummeted to the ground.

The frozen energies then caught the fleets themselves. The ships tried to maneuver, but so widespread was the attack there was nowhere to run to. Quickly and efficiently their engines and systems shut down, frozen. As a group they feel towards the ground below.

But Kalto would have none of their crashing into the landscape. Quickly he generated two more massive platforms of ice, each one catching the entire fleet of one of the factions. The fleets slid down the platforms before coming to rest gently against the mountains.

Kalto lowered his arms. Then he sighed and looked to the sky, "I have seen to much destroyed from these petty arguments. I will not let this place fall like the rest as long as I draw breath."

Suddenly Kalto felt weak and his power leave him. "Infinite Chaos" was a powerful source of limitless power, but only for a limited time. His time up Kalto collapsed to his knee.

The pillar of ice he stood on quickly collapsed, no longer being supported by Kalto's power. He fell off the tower weakly. As he fell he saw the platforms of ice and solid air he had created. They looked like a giant crystal flower glistening in the sunlight.
Then he hit the ground with his back, hard.

Kalto lay dazed for a time. Wearily he stood up. Looking around he saw the winter forest, as clean and pure as it had been when he arrived. Only the remains of his ice seemed out of place.

As Kalto smiled at what he had accomplished a cold breeze blew by him. "Funny," he thought, "Normally I never notice the cold. Guess this it the price to pay for saving the place". His powers had been completely drained for the time.

Deciding it would be best to find shelter Kalto began to walk away from where he had landed. He didn't get far though before he collapsed into the snow. "Heh heh, or I may as well rest here," he thought, closing his eyes. As he slept snow began to fall.

...

Sometime the next day Kalto's ear twitched at the sound of approaching footsteps. He peered up, being partly covered in the snow. He was surprised and relieved to see the familiar face of his brother Verdo.

"Kalto," Verdo said with a smile, "So you went through with it."

"Did I do it?" Kalto asked weakly.

"You mean did you save this place?" Verdo replied as he grabbed Kalto's fallen wrist. "You saved this and much more."

Kalto closed his eyes as Verdo picked him up, he was still to weak to stand. "But only for now. As soon as they build more ships it will start again."

Verdo grinned and shock his head. He effortlessly held Kalto up, "No, Ashura and Fero are speaking to the factions. Their making sure they see that they must talk peace."

Kalto looked into his brother's eyes with disbelief, "But I thought you guys said that you wouldn't involve yourselves in anyone else's affairs."

Verdo looked ahead, "If it's important enough for you to fight, then its important enough for us to step in. We can't let our brother fight a battle like that on his own."

Verdo then looked serious as he concentrated, "Chaos, Control!" Both Kalto and Verdo were whisked away by Verdos own chaotic powers, leaving only footprints in the snow behind.

Art piece of Kalto having temporarily lost his powers and has been lying in the snow for a while.

I was trying a great many new tricks with this.
